Part 6: Staying Motivated

Another way to keep motivated is to make a pledge to be more active. A good pledge is realistic, specific, and able to be done regularly and over time.

On the next page we'll ask you to pledge one thing you will do to be more active during the coming week.

But first, to help you write a good pledge, assess the pledges below. For each pair of pledges, pick the one you think best meets the criteria of being realistic, specific, and able to be done regularly and over time.

1.

I ran quite a bit
3 years ago; I'll
start tomorrow
running 5 miles
every morning.

I'll start walking
for 15 minutes each morning, then gradually (over the next few months) work my way back to running 5 miles a day.

Each weekend for
the next two months, I'll walk or ride my bike for 30 minutes on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

I'll exercise more
on the weekends.

I'll participate in a soccer tournament.

I'll join a
soccer team that practices for an hour once a week.
