Executive Summary of the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of the High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (JAMA reprint)

This report summarizes the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III, or ATP III). The executive summary is developed from the clinical guidelines for cholesterol testing and management as described in the full ATP III report. The ATP III report is evidenced-based and provides the scientific rationale for the recommendations contained in the executive summary.

The executive summary presents information on risk assessment, which is determined by assessing the LDL cholesterol, appropriate risk determinants and the individuals other major risk factors. LDL-lowering therapy in primary and secondary prevention are addressed as is Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC), the multifaceted lifestyle approach to CHD risk reduction. Drug therapy in primary and secondary prevention, the metabolic syndrome as a secondary target of therapy, management of specific dyslipidemias and methods to enhance adherence to LDL lowering therapy are reviewed.
