Blood Pressure Screening activities are held monthly at each site. In May special emphasis will be made to educate african-american children in these wards and sites about the growing statistics for children with this disease. This year, ISHIB joined efforts with the Atlanta Black Nurses Association (ABNA). Thanks to the collaboration with ABNA, the 2006 event was a great success.
There were approximately 15 worship sites covered and some 5,000 packages of patient information on hypertension, diabetes and the DASH eating plan were distributed. In addition, there was a brochure concerning heart health with a chart to maintain a record of blood pressure screenings. After the worship service, blood pressure screenings were conducted. (These patient handouts are available from ISHIB at no cost.)

| | Sponsor Organization: | Sponsor-African American Health Program | | Title: | Community Based Blood Pressure Clinic | | Abstract: | As part of National High Blood Pressure Month, the African American Health Program will first hold a training for health promoters who are lay people from the community and teach them about high blood pressure and its risk factors, symptoms, needed lifestyle changes and how to accurately take a blood pressure. This group will then assist the African American Health Program in going out into the community and conducting 18 community based blood pressure clinics at several Safeway food stores and Eckard pharmacies. The clinics will consist of 2 tables for taking blood pressures(screening)which will be manned by a nurse and 2-3 health promoters. The health promoters will be responsible for educating individuals who have their blood pressure taken about the risk factors, importance of taking meds, and the consequences of uncontrolled blood pressure, as well as referring clients to our free programs or classes such as smoking cessation, cadiokickboxing, pilates, and nutrition classes. Clients who are identified as having a high blood pressure reading and who have not seen a doctor, will be referred to our nurse practitioner for a definitive diagnosis of hypertension. This is an effort to let people know that the "Mission is Possible" and sharing with the community information about the resources available for people to get help with eliminating risk factors for stroke, heart disease and hypertension.
