Although obesity is a devastating public-health crisis in the United States, many people are not aware of the statistics concerning childhood obesity. Over the past 30 years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled among children ages 2-5; has tripled among youth ages 6-11; and has more than tripled among adolescents and teens ages 12-19. Parents and caregivers are the primary influencers for children ages 8-13, and they can help children lead healthier lives. Back-to-school time is a great time to take the first step to healthier choices for the whole family. We Can! provides parents with some easy ways to promote these choices through three key behaviors: improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time.
